The Norwegian will break Cristiano Ronaldo’s goalscoring record if he scores against Inter Milan in the opening match of the 2024-25 Champions League.

Man City has had a very successful start to this Premier League season, winning all four of their opening matches. Erling Haaland has been the standout player, scoring 9 goals. With his incredibly impressive goal-scoring form, the Norwegian striker is now on the verge of breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s record.

As of now, Ronaldo holds the record for being the fastest player to reach 100 goals for a European club. Specifically, during his time at Real Madrid, the Portuguese star took only 105 matches to score his 100th goal.

Erling Haaland has so far scored 99 goals for Man City after 103 matches across all competitions. This means that if he scores against Inter Milan in the opening game of the 2024-25 Champions League group stage, the Norwegian striker will break Ronaldo’s record.

If he doesn’t score against Inter Milan, Haaland can only match Ronaldo’s record if he scores in the match against Arsenal this weekend.

In a press conference ahead of the Inter Milan game, Man City coach Pep Guardiola expressed his surprise at Erling Haaland’s prolific goal-scoring form.

“Am I surprised? Yes! Do you know why? I played professionally for 11 years and only scored 11 goals (for Barcelona). Meanwhile, Erling has scored 9 goals in just 4 matches. He could match my total in a single game.

I think with experience in each match, he can improve his skills. It’s very hard to improve if you’re not playing. He’s getting better naturally. The difference compared to last season is that he feels better now. When he first arrived, he had some muscle issues.

Honestly, I didn’t expect Erling to score 2-3 goals every game. But right now, that’s exactly what’s happening,” Pep said ahead of the match against Inter Milan.
